Childbirth is a special time for both mum and dad, and having a birth plan allows you to openly communicate with your ob-gyn and healthcare team about your wishes for the labour and delivery. It’s important to let your healthcare team know what you want and don’t want to be done during labour to give you the best experience possible.
However, remember that sometimes life gets in the way of the best laid plans, so it’s important to stay flexible when you need to be! During labour, a birth plan also helps you refresh the memory of your healthcare provider, as well as let the new members (such as the nurses present) know about your preferences.
Have an in-depth discussion with your doctor regarding the labour process, pain relief methods, and any other concerns that you and your partner may have, and ask them more about coming up with a birth plan.
Here are some things to consider placing in a birth plan during labour and after baby is born:
During labour, would you prefer to…
After birth, would you prefer to…
Feel free to add or reduce items from the birth plan – discuss your birth plan with your partner and your doctor
Once again, remember to be flexible with your birth plan. If your doctor states that a certain procedure is medically required to ensure the safety of baby, do listen to them as they will know what’s best for both you and baby.
